Travel

In the next class we will talk about travel and plan a trip to Budapest, Hungary. Please read the introduction below and then answer ONE of the following questions.

Hungary is famous for its wine, hot springs, and goulash, but there is so much more. The capital, Budapest, is a hip and vibrant city that is not so cheap, but a very good value. Autumn is a good time to go – the changing leaves are romantic and the cool weather is perfect for drinking coffee in a cozy cafĂ© in the back streets near the university. Budapest is full of art galleries, museums, monuments, festivals and lively nightclubs.
The Hungarian language is quite difficult for beginners, but if you learn a few phrases, you should have no problem communicating. At the very least, learn how to say “hello”, “please”, “thank you”, and the numbers up to ten.
Budapest is actually two cities separated by the Danube River. Buda, in the west of the city, is rugged, hilly and tranquil. Pest, in the east, is the heart of the city. Everything is within walking distance of subways and trams so it is easy to get around.

1. What is the most interesting thing for you about Budapest? Why?
2. Do you think the advice about learning the language is good? Why or why not?
3. If you have been to Budapest or Hungary, what was it like?

  1. Hi Matt!

Yesterday it rained so heavily didn't it?
    I wanted to stay home・・(^^)

I'd like to answer the first question.
I'm interested in the wine festival in Budapest.
Visiters can enjoy tasting wines and talk with producers of them.
I like wines so I want to visit Budapest and take part in the festival.

    See you next week!

  2. Hi,Matt!

I would like to answer the second question.

I think this advise is not full.
I don't think these three phrases help me...
If I go to Hungary with a friend who has a good command of Hungarian language, I will enjoy trip there with three phrases:)
But, if I go there by myself, perhaps, I can't come back to Japan safe and sound...
More words and phrases we learn, more fun we have during the trip.

    I want to travel overseas!

    See you next lesson!

  3. Hi, Matt!!!!

I would like to answer the second question.

If you go to a country you have never been, I think you should at least learn those words.
This will make people in Hungary glad.

    See you next class.

  4. Hello, Matt!

    Q1:
I am very interested in the transport in Budapest, especially in subways. Although I’m not a railfan, I would like to see what the subway trains there are like. According to Wiki, the subway system in Budapest, called “Budapest metro”, is the second oldest one in the world and its Line 1 is registered as a World Heritage. I have a friend who knows very much about trains, so I’m going to ask him about it in detail!

    See you!

  6. Hi,Matt!

I'd like to answer the 1st question.

  9. Hi, Matt!

I don't think the advice is good...'cause it's too normal! Everyone knows that one should learn a few phrases of the language of the country which one is goning to travel around. I think the writer of the text should have given some examples, then it should be more interesting and informative! But anyway it's a little bit exaggerating! You can use the phrases which you've memorized, but the people there must use others you don't know and you must sometimes understand them.

    See you next class!

  11. Hi Matt.

I would like to answer the 1st question.
I have never known the origin of the name Budapest.
It is interesting for me that the name is composed of two words.
Is it the same in terms of the name Kunitachi composed of Kokubunji and Tachikawa?
Also I felt like learning the sense of Buda and Pest.

  12. Hi,Matt!
I'd like to the second question.
I think learning the language before traveling is good.If we can find some words which we learned before trip,we become happy, and enjoy more.
    That's why I recomend.

I'd like to answer the first question.
I didn't know that Budapest is actually two cities.

  14. Hi Matt!

I'd like to answer the third question. I've been in Budapest for three times and once in other city in Hungary. In Budapest there are so many old beautiful buildings in the city. Budapest is not so "clean", that is why, you can feel that people really live there and they enjoy being in the city. I found the tram ways in Budapest are much better than japanese traffic system. Especially, the tram No.1, if you take the tram No.1, you see the beautiful view of the Danube and bridges.

    see you tomorrow!

  18. Hi,Matt!
I think it is interesting that Budapest means in fact two cities. And these two cities are completly different. I'd like to visit both cities and, in addition, I'd like to visit the hotspring.

I'm looking forward to next class:-)

  19. Hi, Matt! I want to answer the first question.
I have known that Hungary is famous for its hot springs, but I didn't know that it is also so for such entertainments as festivals and night clubs. I didn't have an image of active and lively Hungary's figure, so I was amazed a little bit.

  21. Good morning Matt!!

    Q2:
I think the advice about learning Hungarian language is enough,
but the author should refer to the point that there the tourists could speak in English or not.
For example when I went to France, the local people spoke to me in English, so it was very easy for us to communicate each other.
(I wanted to speak in French, though...)

    See you!!

  24. Hello,Matt!

I'd like to answer the second question.
I think those words would allow us to survive there, but not enough to have nice conversation. I think talking with local people is one of the interesting part in traveling abroad.
Actually, my aunt can speak Hungarian but she said it was very tough.

    See you!
